Over 80% of surveyed leaders have declared that innovation is one of their main objectives, but only 6% of them expressed satisfaction with this aspect in their organization  1. Psychological safety, clear communication and collective intelligence are the keys to innovative teams. We invite you to explore a method you can apply with your team to improve these key factors of team dynamics.

Six thinking hats of Bono

The "Six thinking hats of Bono" is a method developed by Dr. Edward de Bono, which makes it possible to examine a subjec objectively and in a non-confrontational way, from several perspectives. The technique, utilizing six colored hats, symbolizes different aspects of thinking.  Individuals or teams can use it to break free from their usual thought patterns, trying various approaches before making an informed decision on the best course of action.

When applied effectively, it can promote psychological safety within teams by allowing individuals to step out of their natural thinking mode, encouraging open communication, empathy, and a deep understanding of different perspectives.

White hat: This hat focuses on facts, figures and objective information. It encourages team members to share their knowledge without preconceived or emotional bias. What are the objective facts in this situation?
Red hat : The red hat symbolizes emotions, feelings and intuition. It gives team members explicit permission to express their fears, concerns and positive feelings without justification. How do I feel about this situation? What are our initial emotional reactions?
Black hat: Representing critical and analytical thinking, the black hat is used to express potential challenges, risks or problems. What are the risks and potential limits associated with this decision? Where might mistakes or problems lurk?
Yellow hat : This hat symbolizes optimism and positive thinking, emphasizing benefits and value. What are the potential benefits of this idea or decision? How can this approach improve our situation?
Green hat : The green hat represents creativity, new ideas and innovative solutions. What new or original ideas can we bring to the table? How can we encourage innovation in this situation?
Blue hat : The blue hat, meaning control, is used to manage the thought process. It ensures that every type of thinking is respected in discussions and that no one point of view dominates. What is being put in place? How is it organized? What steps should we follow to make a decision?2

Using the Six thinking hats of Bono

  • Each group member must metaphorically wear one hat at a time and reflect on a given issue, embodying the corresponding thinking style.
  • The person wearing the blue hat may be responsible for the correct use of the technique and the allocated time (if there is no external facilitator).
  • Each hat is explained, and individuals understand the role they will play in the discussion.
  • Set a running order for the hats: for example, it is better to start with the white hat and finish with the blue hat, avoiding placing the black hat directly after the green one. Ensure that each role has the opportunity to express itself.
  • Ensure that each role has the opportunity to express themselves.

Acknowledging the validity of different ways of thinking is always beneficial for strengthening collective intelligence, empathy and mutual understanding of each others role. Using the Six Thinking Hats promotes balanced and respectful dialogue, creating an inclusive atmosphere. It enables team members to free themselves from their usual roles and contribute without fear of negative consequences. This process encourages a collaborative, innovative and high-performance working environment.

Key benefits of using the Six thinking Hats of Bono:

  • Organize productive, effective and focused meetings.
  • Create a productive atmosphere for the whole team that minimizes counter-productive behavior.
  • An environment that leads to minimum conflicts, as everyone's views and opinions are taken into account.
  • Enhancing both problem-solving efficiency and overall team performance.
  • In-depth problem assessment.
  • Encouraging teammates and collaborators to embrace innovation and explore new ideas.

When will you apply this technique in the future?
